Founded in 1045 by Břetislav I., the Benedictine monastery stands on the site of a Great Moravian fortified settlement, making it one of the oldest monasteries in Moravia. It has been repeatedly plundered by various armies, burned down, and rebuilt.
Its current Baroque appearance was shaped by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel between 1721 and 1746. The monastery itself is a complex of single-story buildings primarily clustered around the Paradise courtyard, dominated by the Church of St. Peter and Paul.
Today, the monastery houses a permanent exhibition documenting the most significant figures of literature in Moravia from the 9th to the 20th centuries. You can also explore the interiors of the historic Benedictine library with 18,000 volumes, a period kitchen, or the monastery garden.
Interestingly, the rare exhibits in the library were also used for study by J. Dobrovský.

The area is quite extensive and I haven't seen all of it yet - that is, all of it from the point of view of accessibility for visitors. But what I have seen so far was worth it. 👍

Wonderful simply...an amazing guide who spoke humorously but also interestingly. Two hours flew by and we saw almost everything.
